A tour to Zante’s ever-magical villages vol.1
Zante is famous for its sheer beauty, the lush vegetation and the mesmerizing landscape, proudly showcased in its great town and the impeccable villages. Despite being rocked by the strong earthquake in 1953, island's villages managed to keep their traditional architectural aspects. Keri Village is a must-visit destination if you are planning to spend your vacations in Zante. Keri is located twenty-one kilometers away from the capital. The inhabitants are quite hospitable while the setting remains traditional, unspoiled by the tourist invasion. Stroll around its quaint alleys that will lead you to the central square. From there you can relish breathtaking vistas to the ever-sparkling Ionian Sea. There aren’t many amenities here to eat or drink, but you ‘ll surely find cafes to repose and take in the scenic environs.
The mountainous village of Maherado lies ten kilometers away from Zante Town. The beautiful village is the second most populated in the island, counting approximately one thousand residents. It boasts the 14th century Church of Agia Mavra. Its magnificent Venetian belfry, the splendid icon of Agia Mavra, which is believed to hold miraculous properties, as well as the one-off frescoes, attract visitor's attention. Among the offerings inside the church, the beautiful jewel of Queen Olga stands out. Close to the church, you ‘ll also find the Monastery of Yperagathou.
Another mountainous village that definitely worths your attention is Volimes Village. It is situated thirty-three kilometers northwest of Zakynthos Town and it is divided into two villages, namely Ano (Up) Volimes and Kato (Down), nestled in a rural area, unscathed by tourism. The stone built houses and the Church of Agia Paraskevi are village's main attraction. There is also the monastery of Agios Georgios built in the 16th century, while nearby lies the world-renowned Shipwreck Bay.
